I consider documentation and meaningful function / variable names a part of the coding standards that any self respecting programmer should adhere to. That is mostly the maintainability part of the equation, rather then communications skills.

Communication (including listening, not just speaking) is also extremely important. If the programmer can’t communicate with his managers, team mates and clients, it’s all over. This mostly falls under your “people skills” category but also extends into writing clear documentation, meaningful function and variable names and code comments for other programmers, etc.

Depending on your business, doing “Just Enough” could be exactly what you want. When launching something new, you have absolutely idea what “enough” is. Do “too much,” and you can wind up sinking time and energy into a failure. Or go “too far” in the wrong direction.

By doing “Just Enough,” you get out into the real world, get feedback, and iterate.
