The breaking news are that Zend has fired 25% employees R&D department (Updated, thanks David for pointing that out), possibly in preparation for acquisition my a major player. Zend employees are major contributers in the PHP open-source project, so this has tangible ramification for all of us PHP developers out there.

Back in 2006 Microsoft signed a major deal with Zend. Could they be interested parties? I have a pipe dream in which Microsoft buys Zend and integrates PHP as a replacement for ASP.NET.

I wish all the best to Zend, I had the pleasure of talking to several of their employees on different occasions and I got the impression they hire very well. Too bad they had give some of those good people up.

  1. Please read carefully before commenting on an item. Zend did not lay off 25% of its employees. According to the tech crunch article, it’s 25% of its R&D team, which is only a part of the company.

  2. You are quite right, I mis-read. Thanks for pointing that out.

  3. If Microsoft takes over Zend and gets control of PHP I have to say goodbye to PHP. All my investments for nothing… :(

I get nauseous just thinking about it.
